Fencing
Fencing is primarily used in gardens to define boundaries and provide privacy.
Ready-made fencing panels secured between posts set in the ground is now the more usually adopted type of construction, but the more traditional featheredge boarding, individually nailed to horizontal arris rails between posts, looks good and is still popular.
Ready-made panels are generally 1.83m (6 ft) wide and in height 4ft, 5ft, and 6ft; there is a big choice and here are just a few …
Plain lap panels
Lap panels with trellis top
Featheredge panels with either straight, convex or concave tops
Featheredge panels with lattice tops
Palisade panels with either pointed or rounded tops
We can show you images of these and other types of panel in our suppliers' brochures and if you need a garden gate then these can be made to suit your chosen style of fencing.
Whatever your choice of fencing it will need to be secured to posts, which can be either wood or concrete.
Hardwood posts are more durable than softwood and a thicker 4 inch square post will last longer than a 3 inch. Wooden posts and gravel board blend naturally with your garden but if long-term durability is what you are looking for, then an alternative which is maintenance free, strong and will really last a very long time is concrete posts and gravel boards. These are constructed so that the panels slot into channels in the posts, making any future fence work a simple task of replacing panels.
Whether your choice is wood or concrete, they will be set well into the ground and secured with concrete which, in our opinion, is the preferred and more secure method of installing posts.
Decking
As an addition to, or instead of a paved patio, wooden decking is an alternative way of extending your living space into the garden to provide an area for seating and outdoor relaxation.
Decking can be particularly useful in creating a level area on sloping ground and steps, balustrades and pergolas can all be incorporated into the structure.
As for a paved area, think about the most suitable position in your garden in relation to access
from your house and where the sun shines throughout the day.
There are different types of wood that can be used in decking construction and we will discuss with you the pros and cons of hardwoods, which are more durable, and pressure treated softwoods. Whatever you choose, it is important to realize that in order to maintain its appearance all outdoor wooden structures do require a certain amount of maintenance and we will advise you on the best way to care for your chosen material.
Other wooden garden structures
In addition to fencing and decking, other items constructed in wood and popular in gardens are available from SCP Landscapes. Trellis work, arches and arbours can be supplied and installed and we can work with you to design and construct pergolas to your specification.
